Fake America

I had a big realization this morning about all the “real America” statements coming from the Right lately. How can you claim that some people are real and good and other people are unpatriotic and bad and then seek a job where you are supposed to be working for all people’s best interests. And since city people are usually excluded from “real America” you then only support a minority of your constituents because the vast majority of people in this country live in urban areas. Do they think it’s ok to be divisive just to get elected and then once they get in office they can be like “oh just kidding, I like all the people I’ve been elected to represent, even the fake Americans.”

This just makes me crazy. If you’re liberal, if you think rich people should pay their fair share of taxes, if you live in a city, you are a fake American. A faker is someone who calls herself a “regular hockey mom” and then goes on $75,000 shopping trips at Neiman Marcus. A faker is someone who pretends to identify with “Joe the Plumber (also a fake)” and can’t remember how many houses he owns. How can we trust people who use hate, fear, distrust and an us against them mentality to win an election to unify the country?

There is no fake America. Your political beliefs and values do not change magically your nationality.

In the words of Barack Obama “ENOUGH!”

“We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation.” – Sara Palin, October 16, 2008

Jon Stewart often defends Big City Values on the Daily Show but yesterday’s show was really excellent. I recommend watching the full show, but here is a clip.
