Value of the Day – Commuting by Bike

Value of the Day

Today I rode my bike to work. This past weekend I rode my bike to the grocery store to buy some food for the house. I love riding my bike in the city.

I love the big city value of supporting car-free modes of transportation. People walk, bike, take public transportation and use services like Philly Car Share. We have bike clubs, running clubs, and official and unofficial rides and races of all kinds. Not only is it healthier to walk or ride a bike, but it saves money and the environment.

I have to add the corollary, “commuting by mass transit.” I’ve taken the regional rail to work every day for years, and I pray that I will never be forced to drive to work. The train is faster, immeasurably better for the environment and way more relaxing. In addition, I actually get to see people, smile at them and even chat, as opposed to cursing at them from my hermetically sealed pod while they try to cut me off in gridlock.
Mass transit = friendlier, cleaner, more chilled-out community!

Hey Tracy, nice bike! Is that what they call a “fixie”? Just one gear? Do you have brakes? If not, how do you make a sudden stop? I’m interested on getting one but the thought of no brakes and one gear (we have a couple of big hills in my city) make me a bit uncomfortable.

Greetings from Nürnberg, Germany.

Thanks! Yes it is a fixie. I have one front brake, but I do most of my slowing down with my legs. Hills would be a challenge, but I LOVE riding fixed gear.
