Just say NO to Casinos!

I love that within the vast boundaries of my big city, a casino cannot find one neighborhood that is willing to welcome it without resistance!

We have to keep fighting the damn thing -now they want to put the Foxwoods Casino in the Gallery (a center city mall on the adjacent of china and other communities in mixed use commercial/residential areas in center city)!

Mr. Harry Leong Director of a community center in China Town put it well when (quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday) he said: “People view Chinatown as primarily restaurants but we have a community here too,” According to Ed Rendell a positive about the location is that it is: “not basically a residential area” while it is equally as close to dense residential blocks as the other proposed locations that were fought by communities (the riverfront and Fishtown).

Having grown up in center city and then living here again various times over the years I have seen the impact of attitudes and planning that assume the city is simply a commercial district, disregarding the fact that people (lots of them) actually live here.

I could go on and on and on but I will w/hold my rants for some drunken eave but if you are opposed you can visit: http://www.casinofreephila.org/ to keep informed and join the fight.

If you are so inspired please also write to Mayor Nutter, Governor Ed Rendell and Councilman DiCicco and voice your opinion. Plus (though I have not found it on the sites yet) there is a petition in the works I’m sure.
